Donald Trump hasn't endorsed anyone in the Texas Republican Senate primary. But two people from his inner circle have: his 2024 co-campaign manager Chris LaCivita and his personal pollster Tony Fabrizio, both working to keep incumbent Sen. John Cornyn afloat against Attorney General Ken Paxton in a race heading to a May 26 runoff.
Trump's silence hasn't been neutral in practice. LaCivita's presence has functioned as a signal—a way of lending Trump-world credibility to Cornyn without a formal stamp.
The Foundation
This isn't the first time LaCivita and Cornyn have worked together. In 2010, LaCivita served as National Political Director for the NRSC under Cornyn's chairmanship. That working relationship—now more than a decade old—forms the backbone of what is today a senior advisory role for Cornyn's aligned super PAC, Texans for a Conservative Majority.
LaCivita's political résumé is expansive: chief strategist for Swift Boat Veterans for Truth in 2004, campaign manager for George Allen's 2000 Senate bid, and the strategist credited with bringing, in Bloomberg's words, discipline to Trump's 2024 operation.
The Position
LaCivita is consulting for the Cornyn super PAC, not the campaign directly—a technical distinction that provides political cover for all parties. The arrangement allows Cornyn to benefit from Trump-adjacent credibility while Trump maintains public neutrality. A Rice University political science professor said a Trump endorsement would likely determine the runoff outcome, which makes LaCivita's unofficial Trump-world imprimatur all the more valuable heading into May.
