The AI Election Is Here—But You're Hearing Something Else In The Press
The AI election is here. But while there is a countless amount of content being published about AI, this coverage gravitates towards the sensational, the scary, and the sci-fi. What gets lost in the alarming clickbait is how AI is actually transforming campaigns at every level of politics across the country. This newsletter takes you below the blaring headlines, and includes a 3 1/2 minute demo showing you AI actually at work.
Frankenstein Is Coming To Marry You
Calling AI headlines sensational is like calling a Taylor Swift concert a coffee clutch. There is no shortage of AI provocations to make you ponder among many other things:
Is a clone army coming to end the world?
Will I accidentally fall in love with an AI?
If yes, does this count as cheating?
Sub-question, if yes and yes, is it cheating on the AI to fall in love with another AI?
Sub-sub-question, if yes, yes, and yes, isn't the AI by definition also polyamorous?!?!
Unfortunately these quixotic questions are being suggested even by some of the most respected media outlets. Here's a recent headline from The Atlantic, a publication which the authors of this newsletter read and rely on every week.
"ElevenLabs Is Building an Army of Voice Clones
A tiny start-up has made some of the most convincing AI voices. Are its creators ready for the chaos they’re unleashing?"
But now zoom in on the conveniently buried, highlighted (by us) note at the very end of the article, where an audio link to listen to the story unironically reads:
"Produced by ElevenLabs."
Or how about this headline last week in The New York Times:
Juicy stuff. But now notice that this article is read for audio on the New York Times site by. . . you guessed it . . . an AI voice!
See And Hear AI At Work
Our point is not to suggest that the authors of The Atlantic and The New York Times are hypocrites—although perhaps they do lack a certain sense of self-reflecting humor. Our point is instead to show that despite the headlines about clone armies and digital paramours, the most respected news outlets in the country are themselves using AI every day in their own work. This is true for countless professions. And in today's world, the same must be true for any political professional.
We're not saying to ignore the click bait. Some of the stories are downright fascinating. But we are saying that AI is transforming politics in ways unseen and unheard in the press. And the winners and losers in this election cycle will be separated by who owns the space beneath the headlines.
